“Architecture and its little accessories always have critics. But if the strings are tight, the instrument is held firm, the hand is gently slid over the strings before playing, the notes are clear, a familiar fifth, played, you will enjoy yourself and hopefully there will be listeners as well.” – Peeter Pere
Even the smallest projects can contain big ideas. Sometimes these ideas, as well as new studies of materials and forms, can significantly influence architectural practices, becoming a characteristic feature. Small forms such as shelters, sheds, stairs, fences, and spatial installations are something that, being free from norms and rules, have a liberating effect on creativity.
From an architectural point of view, small structures and additions could be considered a logical continuation of a series of extremely simple houses. The architectural idea is to be the most scarce – the goal of simplification is served by one chosen technique, which, by enriching it with different rhythms and pauses, produces the desired result.
• The white concrete garden of the private house in Laagri can be seen as an art piece. The different thickness and angle of the fence posts seem to repeat the rhythm of the trees and nature in the surrounding forest.
• The perforated sheet metal fence in the residential district of Tabasalu conveys the idea of the house and shelter finished with copper sheet and their geometric shape.
• The concrete staircase of the Pääsküla library serves as the focal point of the space and as a sculptural work of art that enriches the environment.
